JANUARY

49th Annual Hashknife Sheriff’s Pony Express Riders swearing-in – Tuesday, January 30. Riders will be officially sworn in as mail carriers at 2:00pm at the Living West Park on the corner of Hopi Drive and Navajo Blvd. Hotdogs, soft drinks and Coffee will be provided for all who attend by the Post Office personnel. Pony Express Ride. Send a letter by Pony Express from Petrified Forest National Park by January 30. The Hashknife Posse travels by horseback from Holbrook to Scottsdale, arriving during the Parada del Sol Parade - the world's longest horse-drawn parade.

Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month. Programs, demonstrations, and activities at the park and throughout the state offer visitors new insights into Arizona’s many prehistoric and historic cultures. Exhibit in the park.

First Step Workshop Annual Salad Luncheon – Fund Raiser – Thursday, April 19 from 11:00 to 1:30pm at the Holbrook LDS Stake Center. Tickets $5.00 each – Salads Galore, homemade dinner rolls and desserts.

Southern Navajo & Apache County Special Olympic Area Games - Saturday, April 21 at the Holbrook High School Football Field. Begins at 8:00am. Volunteers and donations still needed. If interested contact Ruth Wallace at 928-524-9032 after 6:00pm or leave message on her recorder.

NPC 12TH Annual Foundation Benefit Auction – TBA - Heward House – The Hanger, 108 Crestview Drive, Holbrook, AZ 86025. 5:00pm – Hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, entertainment & silent auction. 6:00pm – Live Auction. World Habitats Awareness Month. Petrified Forest National Park protects and preserves one of the few remaining and recovering grassland habitats in the Southwest.

National Park Week. April 16-22. Paying tribute to the special places cared for by the National Park Service and honoring the people and organizations dedicated to accomplishing the service’s mission.

National Preservation Month. The National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts around the country.

Wildflower Week. April 30-May 6. Exhibit and self-guided walks in the park.

International Museum Day. May 18 "Museums and Universal Heritage." Exhibit in the park and behind the scenes tours of the museum collections.

Memorial Day. May 28.

 

SUMMER

Cultural Demonstrators. Visit with silversmiths, carvers, weavers, and other demonstrators on most Saturdays through the summer. Many will have items for sale. For details, locations, and dates check at visitor centers in the park.

Artist in Residence Program. Visit with artists using the park for inspiration as they paint, draw, photograph, or otherwise express their artistic ability.

 

JUNE & JULY

Summer Solstice. June 21. Join rangers at Puerco Pueblo for a petroglyph solar interaction between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., including the week before and after the Summer Solstice.

Science Camp. June 21-22. Selected Junior High School students will learn about paleontology and archeology during this two day study at the park.

National Trails Day. June 2. The American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is the only nationwide trails celebration. Come hike a trail or see images of each in the virtual Trails Exhibit.

Holbrook’s 25th Old West Days Celebration – August 17 & 18.  The Holbrook Chamber of Commerce - at the Navajo County Historic Courthouse, and East Arizona Street in Holbrook.  “The Desert Guns,” Old West Re-Enactors, kids games and other entertainment at the gazebo both days; Arts and Crafts and food vendors in courtyard. Navajo County Fair – TBA (76th Annual) – September 12 – 16, 2007. National Public Lands Day (this site is outside NPS.gov). September 22. The nation’s largest single-day, hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. You can visit any federal land area and get in without paying an entrance fee - including Petrified Forest National Park!

Earth Science Week (this site is outside NPS.gov). October 7-13. The National Parks are an excellent place to celebrate and explore earth science.

Art and Essay Contest. Starting in October, students will have the opportunity to compete in both an art and essay contest. Prizes will be given and student work displayed throughout December. Ghosts of the Past. October 26 and 27. Visit the ghosts of Petrified Forest for this evening ranger tour. For details, times, and locations check under Ranger Programs, or at visitor centers in the park.

 

NOVEMBER

15th Annual Business Holiday Showcase & Mixer – Thursday, November 15  – at Holbrook  Elks Lodge – 714 Elkdom Drive, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Entertainment and local business, organizations and individual vendors. Door prizes.

National American Indian and Native Alaskan Heritage Month. Exhibit in the park with some cultural demonstrations. Check at the park for more details.

Holbrook’s 21st Annual Parade of Lights Festival, Saturday, December 1. Celebrating Arizona’s oldest Electric Light Parade sponsored by Holbrook Chamber of Commerce. Parade of Lights. December 1. The park joins our gateway community in Holbrook for this annual evening parade, 6:00 p.m. on Hopi Drive and Navajo Boulevard.

Petrified Forest’s Anniversary. December 8 and December 9. Celebrating the establishment of the park as a national monument 101 years ago on December 8, 1906 and its upgrade to national park status 45 years ago on December 9, 1962.
